Real Madrid v Manchester United Match Report

Manchester United's Champions League clash with Real Madrid ended with a 1-1 draw meaning that the sides are on even grounds before the second leg at Old Trafford.

Danny Welbeck was the player who opened the scoring in the first leg of the last 16 UEFA Champions League in the 20th minute. Shinji Kagawa was fortunate to win  the corner for United after a challenge from Sergio Ramos, and it was Rooney who managed to find the head of Welbeck who expertly put the ball past Diego Lopez and into the back of the Madrid goal.

Just as the visitors started to gain confidence, the Berneu was lit up by its own crowd as Cristiano Ronaldo nodded home an equalizer on the half-hour mark.

It was Angel Di Maria's cross from the left which found the head of the ex United star who seemed to hover before steering a spectacular effort past De Gea and between the United sticks.

After the break both sides had their fair share of chances, neither could add to the scoreline. Real came close twice through Di Maria before Raphael Varane got the benefit of the doubt after a questionable tackle on United's Patrice Evra after the skipper seemed to be through on goal.

As the game progressed, it was Jose Mourinho's side who dominated much of the play with De Gea having to pull of a great save with his foot as Coentrao failed to make the most of a patient Real build-up.

But United remained a threat on the break and Van Persie had a double chance to put his team in front only to see his first shot hit the woodwork and the second cleared off the line by Xabi Alonso.

A series of consecutive substitutions from both managers insured that the game ended 1-1 as the teams go into the second leg in three weeks time.
