Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed that defender Kieran Gibbs could be out for up to six weeks following an injury picked up against Liverpool.
The 23 year-old picked up an injury in his thigh during the first half of Arsenals 2-2 draw against Liverpool on Wednesday evening and was originally thought to be out for three weeks. However since then his expected absence time has been doubled meaning that he would miss both legs against Bayern Munich in the Champions League.
Wenger said that this injury was the main prompt for his Deadline Day move for Spanish full-back Nacho Monreal.
"We expected two to three weeks; now it will be four to six so we were in a
position where we had to make a quick decision. That explains our buy," Wenger said.
"I believe Gibbs will be out for the Champions League. From six weeks it can easily go to eight (before he is competitive again) and that means two months in a very decisive period so it is vital to have another left-back".
The talented Spanish signing will miss the the remainder of Arsenal's Champions League run having already featured for Malaga, meaning that Andre Santos is likely to take the starting spot.
